Simpler Times

I almost blew my hand off with one of these when I was around 12 or 13 years old during one of our annual December trips to Mexico. We were at el mercado that morning and while the rest of the family were buying the mandado for la cena de noche buena I casually picked up a bunch of fire crackers from a neighboring store. That night while the adults were inside eating and conversating; my cousins, siblings, and I acted a fool outside. To top off the shenanigans I pulled out the mega paloma I had purchased earlier that morning. I lit a match (you know, from those little yellow match boxes) and I lit my paloma. I was so mesmerized and hypnotized by the spark that I forgot I was holding it. Everyone kept frantically yelling, "AVIENTALA," "THROW IT!" I broke my trance and threw the fire cracker and as soon as I did, "BOOOOOMMMM!!!!" The whole block rattled and all the adults came out to see what had happened. They all angrily asked, "QUIEN FUE? and everyone nervously pointed at me. I just stood there a bit lost and with an annoying ringing in my ears that lasted 3 days. The funny thing is that my uncle was filming the dinner and interaction inside the house and you could hear the big boom in the video and everyone rapidly getting up from their seats and rushing outside.
